Statement On January 2021 Hawaii Supreme Court Decision On Commercial Marine Licenses

Statement from PIJAC Vice President of Government Affairs Bob Likins:
Alexandria, Va. – January 25, 2021 – “The Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council is disappointed by the recent Hawaii Supreme Court ruling on commercial marine licenses (CML). We believe that the decision goes well beyond interpreting the State Supreme Court decision on aquarium permits and could in effect require applicants to also apply for court approval after their license has already been approved by the state. The decision appears to subject all CML issuances to the Hawaii Environmental Policy Act (HEPA), meaning it could have a significant negative impact on all individuals and their families who depend on fish collection for their livelihoods, including for food as well as for aquariums. PIJAC is currently examining our options to determine our way forward.”
