In a statement issued today, Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC) President and CEO Mike Bober responded to the passing of Ohio SB331, to create consistent state-level regulations concerning buying standards for Ohio pet stores relating to the sale of dogs. With its passage, the Ohio Department of Agriculture, which already regulates Ohio licensed high–volume canine breeders, will now also oversee pet store buying standards.

We applaud the state of Ohio and Governor John R. Kasich for taking this positive step toward consistent, statewide protection of pets and pet owners. The passage of SB331 makes Ohio a national leader in the effort to enact effective, common-sense legislation that addresses concerns about animal care and sourcing.

It is a tremendous advance in ensuring the availability of responsibly bred pets at a store level, where transparency allows prospective pet owners to find their perfect companion with confidence that it comes from a caring and responsible breeder. By regulating pet stores at the state level, Ohio can ensure a positive pet buying experience for both the consumer and the pet throughout the state.

We are proud to support this significant step forward in the protection of companion animals and consumers alike.
