2017 Legislative Session Overview - West Virginia

The West Virginia Legislature adjourned its 2017 legislative session on April 9, 2017.

5 pet industry-related bills were introduced, 3 of which were considered priority by PIJAC.

Final Disposition of Priority Legislation:




HB 2168

Amends Chapter 7 (County Commissioners and Officers) and Chapter 8 (Municipal Corporations) of the Code of WV to prohibit municipalities and counties from enacting ordinances or regulations that base restrictions on the breed of a dog.


HB 2552

Increases the annual registration fee from $50 to $150 for pet food (including specialty pet foods) in packages over 10 pounds.


HB 2905

Amends Chapter 7 (County Commissions & Officers), Articles I (County Commissions Generally) and 10 (Humane Officers) of the Code of West Virginia to provide for standards and inspections of animal shelters.
