A national pet care association says Massachusetts lawmakers should pay close attention to the projected closure of Cambridge, Massachusetts’ Petco store. The closure comes shortly after testimony provided to the Joint Committee on Municipalities and Regional Government by Cambridge Vice-Mayor Marc McGovern in which McGovern claimed Petco planned to expand operations in the city.

The Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC) is urging California Governor Jerry Brown to veto Assembly Bill 485. AB 485 is a statewide ban on the sale of non-rescue, non-shelter dogs, cats, and rabbits from pet stores that passed the state Senate on Tuesday and was approved by the Assembly today.

A landmark initiative to help assure proper care of small companion animals was unveiled today by the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC) and leaders from across the pet community. The PIJAC Small Animal Standards of Care (SAC) is the first-ever, comprehensive set of voluntary standards for breeders and distributors of small mammals, reptiles, and birds.

Today, stakeholders met to discuss the future of Assembly Bill 485. Regretfully, the bill’s proponents did not change their position, meaning that those who care for and about companion animals will continue to oppose AB 485 on behalf of California’s pets, pet lovers, and providers of pet care.

Four New Jersey pet care professionals and a national leader in animal advocacy today called on state Senators to support Governor Chris Christie’s conditional veto of Senate Bill 3041. The bill, which would undermine New Jersey’s Pet Purchase Protection Act, is before the Senate tomorrow for a veto override vote.

In a statement issued today, Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC) praised New Jersey Governor Christie for his conditional veto of Senate Bill 3041. S3041 would have threatened the sale of dogs and cats by reputable breeders and retailers, and put the government between pets and pet owners.

The Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC) is responding to a major policy change by the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) last week to remove inspection reports and other documents including personal information, such as “regulatory correspondence, research facility annual reports, and enforcement records that have not received final adjudication” from their website.

In a statement issued today, PIJAC President & CEO Mike Bober responded to a new Arizona law implementing consistent statewide standards in regards to the sale of commercially bred dogs and cats in pet stores. This new state-level legislation reverses local sales bans in Phoenix and Tempe as well as a proposed one in Tucson.

U.S. – The Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC) is recommending that all exporters, shippers, importers and buyers of Cynops orientalis (Firebelly) and Pachytriton labiatus (Paddletail) newts immediately establish a voluntary moratorium on importing them into the United States.  We further recommend that all non-retail businesses engaged in the salamander trade regularly sanitize their facilities as a prophylactic measure, as treatments are developed, out of an abundance of caution.

Hershey, PA –Today at Barkleigh Productions’ Groom Expo, the Professional Pet Groomers & Stylists Alliance (PPGSA) formally released the results of a year-long initiative to develop comprehensive safety and sanitation standards that will serve as the grooming industry’s standard of care for pet grooming.  These industry-wide standards are the first of their kind and a significant milestone in the grooming industry.

Washington, D.C. – Pet safety during Halloween, as during other festive holidays, should be at the top of the list for pet owners this fall. According to the Pet Poison Hotline, calls increased at Halloween by 21% in 2011, many which were related to chocolate consumption by pets.

Washington, DC, August 25, 2014 – Ken Oh, chairman and interim president of the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC), today announced that Edwin J. Sayres, former president and CEO of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA), has been appointed president and CEO of PIJAC. The PIJAC Board of Directors approved Sayres’ appointment, effective September 1, 2014.

Washington, DC - Chicago’s proposed ordinance that will force the closure of pet stores that sell animals creates new dangers for consumers and does nothing to protect pets. Why?
