Lawmakers are considering changes to the state’s breeding licensure provisions, as well as state law regarding who pays for the care of animals seized in abuse and cruelty cases while courts consider charges. State Senate Majority Leader Jeb Bradley, a republican, has said he intends to introduce legislation related to breeding and inspections.

A landmark initiative to help assure proper care of small companion animals was unveiled today by the Pet Industry Joint Advisory Council (PIJAC) and leaders from across the pet community. The PIJAC Small Animal Standards of Care (SAC) is the first-ever, comprehensive set of voluntary standards for breeders and distributors of small mammals, reptiles, and birds.

Today, stakeholders met to discuss the future of Assembly Bill 485. Regretfully, the bill’s proponents did not change their position, meaning that those who care for and about companion animals will continue to oppose AB 485 on behalf of California’s pets, pet lovers, and providers of pet care.
